"Escrita por Tennessee Williams en un, periodo de gran creatividad, durante la segunda mitad' de los años 50, que incluye obras como 'Súbitamente el último verano' o 'Dulce pájaro de juventud', 'La gata sobre el tejado de zinc caliente' ha sido poco representada en nuestro país, lo mismo que otras obras del autor, cuyos montajes no siempre han sabido sustraerse al influjo de las versiones cinematográficas de Hollywood. Rescatar del modelo Actor's Studio la obra de Williams ha sido uno de los propósitos confesos de Mario Gas y del profesor Manuel A. Conejero, autor de esta versión y director del organismo público Teatres de la Generafitat Valenciana (...). Conejero ha señalado que 'por vez primera se representa en nuestro entorno la versión íntegra de esta obra'. La intención de 'europeizar' la lectura de la obra de Williams, y en general del teatro norteamericano de los cincuenta y sesenta, se recoge también en el programa de actividades paralelas que acompañan el estreno".
