"'Woyzeck' es una extraña obra que un siglo después de que se escribiera podía seguir considerándose de vanguardia. Está inspirada en un hecho real que sucedió en Leipzig en 1824. Un barbero del ejército, Johann Christian Woyzeck, mató a su esposa de forma cruel. Fue detenido y condenado a muerte. El juicio por el asesinato despertó mucho interés en la opinión pública y fue ampliamente seguido por la prensa de aquel tiempo. Estuvo peritado por el forense J.C.A. Clarus. En su informe hablaba de los celos como motivo del asesinato, pero también de trastornos de personalidad de Woyzeck; complejo de inferioridad, alucinaciones y obsesión paranoide con la masonería. El 'Woyzeck' real fue condenado a muerte y ajusticiado públicamente en Leipzig el 25 de agosto de 1824. Büchner conoció todos los hechos y tuvo acceso al informe médico, aunque la obra es una versión libre de lo sucedido y se considera inacabada. El 'Woyzeck' de Büchner no tiene hilo argumental; son 27 escenas breves sin un orden establecido y sin un final concreto.
