"El barberillo de Lavapiés (...) fue compuesta por el maestro Barbieri sobre libreto de Luis Mariano de Larra y se estrenó en el Teatro de la Zarzuela en diciembre de 1874. Trata del complot organizado por una Infanta para derrocar al entonces jefe de gobierno, Grimaldi, en favor del conde de Floridablanca. Se recrean con esta excusa el Madrid castizo del siglo XVIII, las conspiraciones, las intrigas políticas, las majas y los majos, los estudiantes, etc., aunque 'sin ninguna intencionalidad con respecto a las autoridades', aclara Amengual".
