"[...] Brecht nos introduce con gran maestría en un combate entre católicos y protestantes que tuvo lugar en la Guerra de los Treinta años, que en el fondo no es más que la abstracción de cualquier guerra militar, religiosa, política y económica o la síntesis de todas ellas. ‘Madre Coraje’ comienza con una madre que es separada de uno de sus hijos y concluye con esa misma madre absolutamente sola, una vez que todos sus hijos han muerto. Asistimos a la destrucción que provoca la lógica perversa de la guerra en aquellos que la padecen cada día y que nunca son los personajes que las provocan sino los soldados rasos que las llevan a cabo. En este contexto, el personaje de la Coraje aparece en toda su crudeza, sin concesiones y al mismo tiempo con una enorme humanidad. Coraje se aprovecha de las miserias humanas pero no se reprime a la hora de hacer una crítica lúcida y feroz de las actividades corruptas e hipócritas de ambos bandos". (Gerardo Vera.
