Summary, etc	"El libro que hoy recomendamos: 'La escena romana', de W. Beare está publicado por EUDEBA (Editorial Universitaria de Buenos Aires. 1964) y es una traducción de la obra editada en Londres en 1950, con una diferencia importante en el título, que en inglés es: 'The Roman Stage. A Short History of Latin Drama in the Time of the Republic'. El título nos delimita el periodo de la escena romana que va a ser estudiado en el libro: el republicano, que como es sabida llega hasta el siglo de Augusto. Por lo tanto, las tragedias de Séneca quedan fuera del trabajo. Nuestro autor se fija especialmente en las relaciones que el teatro mantenía con los gobernantes, en la realidad social en la que el teatro se producía y en la intención con que se representaba. De este modo, Beare nos va desgranando a lo largo de las 362 páginas del libro divididas en XXVII capítulos y 12 apéndices, una serie de datos desprendidos de su concienzuda labor de estudio que nos ayudan a comprender un poco más, no puede ser de otro modo ya que los hechos conocidos con escasos, lo que ha pasado con la tragedia y la comedia romana...".
