Although at the time Cecchetti had little teaching experience, it is clear that he already saw himself continuing in the tradition of Giovanni Lepri. The duty of the maestro di perfezionamento was to refine the already accomplished skills of those who attended his/her classes, hence it was a pre-condition that such a post could only be occupied by an experienced and talented dancer, able to impart the secrets of performance tradition.
