The images range from portraits by leading artists to illustrations for books and magazines and satirical prints. The major sources for the compilation have been the British Museum Department of Prints and Drawings, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Garrick Club, the Harvard Theatre Collection, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and the Theatre Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. A brief description is given of each image, together with the medium, size and date, where known, and some of the locations where the image can be found.
