Women in particular embraced it for its gentle tone and portability. This article presents a case study of one such amateur, Eliza Chichester of Burton Constable Hall. To understand the place the guitar had in this Yorkshire country house an exploration is made of the life and travels of Eliza and her family. The music that was enjoyed by them and their friends is considered, in particular as it relates to the guitar.
