As a connoisseur of painting, he was one of the king´s main advisors as Charles I assembled one of the great art collections of history. This article examines a newly uncovered portrait of Lanier painted in 1613, the year in which he performed stile recitivo for the first time in the Somerser Masque, and explores the manner in which he sought to communicate his identity as a musician through the medium of the visual arts.
